Chesapeake Bank and the Virginia Bankers Association (VBA) are partnering to offer a unique summer internship experience designed to give students hands-on exposure to Virginia’s banking industry.

Interviews are planned to start begining of February.

Internships will start in May and will last between 10 to 12 weeks.

Responsibilities

Exposure to Virginia’s Banking Industry:

  • Business Applications Intern – Williamsburg, VA
    • Collaborate with the Business Applications team on routine tasks and system analysis while attending team stand-ups and ensuring timely completion of shared duties. Gain experience in optimizing systems for usability, providing fresh insights, and capturing end-user feedback to improve functionality. Build skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and cross-department communication while contributing to process improvements and system enhancements.
  • Compliance/Risk Intern – Williamsburg, VA
    • Gain hands-on experience in regulatory compliance by supporting the BSA/AML team with transaction monitoring, risk assessments, and reporting. Build analytical and problem-solving skills while learning investigative techniques, compliance best practices, and how to ensure adherence to federal regulations. Contribute to critical processes that protect the integrity of financial operations and gain exposure to real-world compliance challenges.
  • Credit Department Intern – Kilmarnock, VA
    • Gain real-world experience in credit analysis by assisting with financial reviews, preparing loan packages, and supporting compliance for commercial real estate transactions. Develop analytical, organizational, and communication skills while contributing to accurate documentation and smooth loan processing.
  • Information Technology Intern – Williamsburg, VA
    • Gain practical experience in IT by assisting with help desk support, PC setup and repair, and inventory management of hardware and network equipment. Build technical skills in system security, workstation imaging, and user access reviews while supporting a fully functioning technology department. This role offers exposure to state-of-the-art systems and hands-on troubleshooting across multiple service regions.
  • Innovation & Strategy Intern – Williamsburg, VA
    • Work directly with the Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer to support projects shaping the future of banking. Gain experience in research on emerging trends like AI and payments, data analysis, and presentation development. Build strategic thinking, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills while contributing to innovation initiatives and process improvements across the organization.
  • Loan Operations Intern – Kilmarnock, VA
    • Gain hands-on experience in loan operations by supporting key administrative processes such as document management, customer communications, and compliance tasks. Build organizational, attention-to-detail, and problem-solving skills while contributing to smooth daily operations and supporting the success of the lending team.
  • Marketing/Community Outreach/Digital Platforms Intern – Williamsburg, VA
    • In this position, you’ll gain hands-on experience in developing and executing campaigns across digital and traditional channels, managing social media content, and analyzing engagement metrics. You’ll collaborate on community outreach initiatives, conduct market research, and support product positioning.  Assist with planning and coordinating community events, creating outreach materials, and building relationships with local organizations and schools. This role offers opportunities to strengthen skills in strategy, communication, event planning, and brand development while making a meaningful impact in the community.
  • Operations Intern – Kilmarnock, VA
    • Gain hands-on experience in core banking operations by supporting tasks that ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Build skills in data entry, document management, and customer service while learning risk management and regulatory processes. Participate in department projects and attend strategic meetings to gain exposure to broader operational initiatives, all while contributing to balancing transactions, processing account updates, and assisting with strategic projects that drive the customer experience and overall bank performance.
  • Retail/Commercial Lending Intern – Williamsburg, Gloucester & Richmond, VA
    • Gain hands-on experience in commercial and mortgage lending by assisting with loan documentation, underwriting support, and portfolio management. Participate in team meetings and select client calls to observe relationship-building strategies while developing skills in credit analysis, compliance, and cross-functional collaboration. Contribute to accurate loan processing and learn how lending decisions shape business success.

 

 

Requirements

The below requirements will be reviewed when choosing the right intern for each position:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Business, management, finance, economics, accounting, marketing, technology, data analytics and/or management information systems
  • Desire to pursue a career in banking.
  • Ability to interact with various levels of employees in both written and verbal form.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Experience demonstrating strong problem solving skills and the ability to prioritize duties and handle multiple assignments
  • Ability to self-motivate and take responsibility for personal growth and development
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Interest in the broad range of risks affecting financial services including areas of auditing and compliance.
  • A basic understanding of one or more of the following: financial reporting concepts, internal audit process, systems detecting unusual activity not compliant with regulation, physical or Informational Security and a general understanding of banking.
  • Excellent technical and computer skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel
  • Flexible in work schedule and location.
